   New Delhi pronunciation is the capital city of India. It serves as the centre of the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. New Delhi is situated within the metropolis of Delhi. It is one of the nine districts of Delhi Union Territory. The total area of the city is 42.7 km2. New Delhi hosts 134 foreign embassies/high commissions. The climate of New Delhi is a monsoon-influenced.



 

HISTORY OF DELHI


Delhi has been built and re-built more than 5 times at different sites in and around Delhi but the correct reference is found in the Mahabharatha as the city of Pandavas, also called Indraprastha some 3000 years ago. The city has a historic importance of its own with every crumbling walls of the city has a story to tell. Delhi has witnessed a rise and fall of major power during 12th century. Until the influx of outsiders, Delhi was home to the Hindu rulers somewhere during the 12th century. Muslim rule in India was established in 12th century after Mohammed Gauri defeated Prithviraj Chauhan. 

Indraprastha: 

Indraprastha was formed in Delhi in 1000 B.C during Mahabharatha which is assumed to have been around the annex of Purana Quila. According to Mahabharatha, Pandavas named this region as Indraprastha which was known as Khandava-Prastha.


Maurya Capital: 
Our history reveals that Delhi was on the great national highway of the Mauryas that linked their capital Patliputra (now Patna in Bihar) with Taxila (Takshashila), now in Pakistan. The Chauhans took control in the 12th century and made Delhi the most important Hindu centre in northern India. 

Delhi Sultanate: 
Delhi was acquired by Qutab-Ud-Din Aibak in 1193 which was followed by mighty Mughals from the year 1526 to 1857. Later on Khilji followers built their new capital at Siri, the second city of Delhi. 

British Rule:
In 1911, king Goerge visited India and it was during his tenure that Delhi became the new capital of India. Delhi saw some significant developments during this period in the form of buildings, infrastructure, parliamentary buildings and public offices. The interception of British rule in India also witnessed a new city being formed in the name of New Delhi or the Lutyens’ Delhi.
It can be said that New Delhi has a regal and majestic history which is quite vivid from the rise and fall of various rules. There is no denying the fact that history of India revolves around the rich history of Delhi.

Delhi has seen major infrastructural changes over the past few years amidst increased foreign investment and economic growth. Delhi has the infrastructure to be called as the modern city. Recent developments and economical growth in Delhi have put the city on the global map competing with other top notch cities in the world. Delhi has a much improved infrastructure with new roads, flyovers, bridges, healthcare facilities, sanitation, etc. Education in Delhi has always been the specialty of Delhi with so many good schools and colleges to choose from. Other major initiatives of the government include telecom, housing, power facilities, and transportation.

 

DELHI METRO – THE CITY LIFE LINE
Metro rail service in Delhi has come as a much awaited gift for the people of Delhi, which has indeed changed the transport facility of the city. It has become the "life line" of Delhi as people are dependent on Delhi Metro for commuting to different places within the city. Delhi Metro Project has been recognized all over the world for its specialty in terms of a hi-tech rail and better equipped transport system. The project is under the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, DMRC and it deserves all the credit for transforming the transport service of the city. 

 

MONUMENTS OF DELHI

The monuments in Delhi are historical sites, which takes the visitors back to the days of Delhi Sultanate and Mughal dynasty.

 

Red Fort

 The Red Fort stands sin Old Delhi and speaks of Emperor Shah Jahan's initiative of constricting the Mughal power within the monument. For this he built a mini city within the fort bounded by high walls. The fort stands on a circumference of 2.2. Kilometers. The fort has a Naqqar Khana or the drum room, the Diwan-e- Am or the Hall of public. There is also the Mumtaz Mahal, Khas Mahal, Diwan-e- Khas, Rang Mahal, Khas Mahal, Hammam or the bathing area and Shah Burj.

 

India Gate

 The India Gate stands in the memory of 90,000 soldiers, who sacrificed their life in the First World War. The names of the soldiers are inscribed on the walls of the gate and an eternal flame burns in the memory of the jawans. It also serves as a gateway to the Rashtrapati Bhavan. 

 

Qutab Minar

 This Delhi Monument is the highest tower in India made of stone. The stone pillar was built by Qutab-ud- Din Aibak when he ascended the throne of Delhi during the era of Delhi Sultanate. He established the slave dynasty. The Minar is 72.5 meters is divided into five storeys.
